Once ships full of immigrants arrived at the harbor of ellis island the first and mostly second class passengers would get a cursory inspection on the ship. The 1st and second class passengers only entered the immigration facility if they failed the cursory inspection on the ships.

On the other hand the lower class passengers did not get a cursory inspection on the ship and they were immediately sent to the immigration facility. They would mostly have to wait in barges or ferries, mostly in crowded conditions.

While immigrants filled the Ellis island registry room, doctors would scan the immigrants for obvious physical or mental problems. Doctors and nurses used chalk to write letters on immigrants clothes to tell is they have any physical or mental issues. An “H” meant that they might have a possible heart condition and an “LCD” meant loathsome contagious disease. This 6 second health inspections were known as “six-second physicals”.

If they passed they will move on and next the immigrants will be asked many questions by an inspector that is usually accompanied by an interpreter. They will be asked questions like what job do they wanna get or where is there next destination.
If immigrants did not pass the health or immigration inspection they were placed in detention until they could have a hearing in front of a bunch of inspectors. Only about 2% of immigrants were deported, usually because they were considered a “likely public charge” in medical or public grounds. Ellis Island is now a museum and is open to anybody.
Ellis Island helped many many immigrants come to america and also helped change america.
